Milk is a white liquid produced in the mammary glands of mammals. All mammals, including humans, will normally produce milk to feed their offspring until they are ready for solid food.

Milk hold some health benefits that help the human body to function. As such, milk contains valuable nutrients that help support a growing body, including calcium and protein. Research about milk is conflicting, however, with different studies claiming milk is either good or bad for the body.

Due to the rising concerns about health, lactose intolerance, and animal welfare, plant-based milk and dairy alternatives have gained popularity. When it comes to having good health, official sources, such as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020, recommends that adults eat about 3 cup-equivalent of low fat-free dairy each day as part of a healthful diet. It could include milk, yoghurt, cheese, and fortified soy beverages.

Milk also helps in the development of strong bones, this is due to the calcium found in the milk.  Calcium is an essential nutrient for strong bones and teeth, muscle movement, and nerve signals. Health authorities recommend getting enough calcium to help prevent bone fractures and osteoporosis. Milk offers a rich source of calcium.

Manufacturers fortify cow’s milk with vitamin D, another nutrient that benefits bone health. While calcium is important, not all studies agree that milk is good for preventing osteoporosis or fractures, as a 2019 review discusses. Due to this discrepancy, scientists still need to do more research.

It reduces heart health problems due to the potassium found in the milk, which helps the blood vessels dilate and reduce blood pressure. Did you also know that milk can prevent cancer? I guess not, well milk contains calcium and vitamin D, two nutrients that may help protect against cancer.

The Calcium may protect the gut lining to reduce the risk of colon cancer or rectum cancer. However, too much calcium can lead to prostate cancer. Whiles Vitamin D might play a role in cell growth regulation. It may help protect against colon cancer, and possibly prostate and breast cancer. However, too much of it can lead to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

Milk also prevents diseases such as depression, helps in muscle building, osteoarthritis a sickness that affects one’s knee, and currently has no cure and also helps one to sleep peacefully at night. Milk cannot be taken by all but there are other alternatives for such individuals.
