THE REVOLUTION OF MAKE-UP.

Lifestyle

From the copper and lead ore that the ancient Egyptians used to create the world’s first cosmetics to the scientifically advanced products of today that can do everything from hiding pores, smooth complexions, and turn the pale green of your eyes to a vivid shade of emerald, makeup has been an integral part of humankind for thousands of years. Over the centuries, women used burnt matches to darken their eyes, berries to stain their lips and young boys’ urine to fade their freckles. They even swallowed ox blood in some misguided attempt to improve their complexions.

Women throughout history put their health at risk with many of their homemade cosmetics. In some cultures, for example, women used to lead, mercury, and even leeches to give themselves the pale appearance deemed beautiful in the old days. Thankfully, we’ve come a long way from the days of using toxic and deadly mixtures to enhance our looks.

Now makeup has developed in so many ways, with so many new products that do not cause much harm to one’s body. Some popular brands include; Anastasia Beverly Hills, NYX Professional Makeup, MAC, Kat Von D, Too Faced, Maybelline, Urban Decay, Make Up for Ever, Wet N Wild, BECCA and many more.

When it comes to makeup, we have different types that work together to give one that perfect look. We have the bronzer which gives skin colour by adding a golden or bronze glow. Concealer covers any imperfections of the skin such as blemishes and marks. Contour Powder or Creams define the face, for example, giving the illusion of a slimmer face or to even modify a person’s face shape as desired. Eyelash Glue helps in sticking false lashes to the eyes.

Eyebrow Pencils used to define the brows. Eye Primer helps in prolonging the wear of eye-shadows and intensifies colours when used with shadows. Face Powder used in setting the foundation, giving a matte finish, and also to conceal small flaws or blemishes. Face Primer is applied before foundation and mostly reduces the appearance of pore size. It also prolongs the wear of make-up and allows for a smoother application of makeup.

But those are not the only types of make-up we have, additional ones include; Foundation to help even out the skin colour. Usually in a liquid, cream, or powder form. Of all the types of makeup, foundation is often the starting block for makeup use. Highlight used in drawing attention to the high points of the face as well as adding glow to the face.

It may contain shimmer.  Lip-gloss is a liquid form of lipstick in a sheer or transparent medium. Lip-balms, liners, primers, and sticks are also liquid or gel base and may contain alcohol to help the product stay on the lips which makes these items generally waterproof.

Makeup remover used to remove the makeup products, for example, before going to sleep. It may or may not contain moisturizing properties. Mascara used in darkling, lengthens, and thickens the eyelashes. Nail polish used in colouring the fingernails and toenails. Rouge, blush or blusher used to bring out the colour in the cheeks and make the cheekbones appear more defined. Finally, the Setting Spray helps in keeping makeup applied for long periods. Setting powder may also be used.

Both can be pigmented or translucent. Before any of these products can be applied, there is the need to use brushes. Each brush has its specific use, and cannot be used for something else. Some include; Foundation Brush, Concealer Brush, Stippling Brush, Angled Blush Brush, Powder Brush, Angled Brush, Contour Brush, and many more.

When it comes to the wearing of make-ups, it turns to looks different on everyone; however, there are looks that one can wear for various occasions. We have, the natural look, the professional look, the sexy look, also the special event, like weddings require a cool of makeup appearance, the holiday looks, when having fun with family and friends a warm makeup look is ideal and lastly the romantic date look.

Make-up thus not only helps one become more beautiful but it also is a lucrative business for most people. I am sure most people thought wearing make-up was easy and that it was cheap. But do you think make-up is needed? Whatever your style, remember to feel confident all the time.
